Maldivian held in Lanka, accused of attempting to smuggle out dollars

A Maldivian has been arrested from the national airport of Sri Lanka - Bandaranaike International Airport, accused of attempting to smuggle out US Dollars.

Sri Lankan newspaper “Daily Mirror” reported that the 53-year-old Maldivian was arrested from the airport on Saturday evening attempting to board a flight to Maldives.

The newspaper reported that the Maldivian had USD 45,000 (MVR 691,200) hidden inside hand luggage.

No further information is available from the newspaper.

According to the Sri Lankan law, no more than USD 5,000 can be taken out of the country without a special permission.
