70 of Maldivian islands are deprived of clean drinking water: President

President Mohamed Nasheed has said that more than 70 inhabited islands of the Maldives are deprived of clean drinking water. He said this while speaking as the chief guest in a ceremony held by the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice. The ceremony was held yesterday at the Grantham Research Institute, London, England.

President Nasheed said that limited water cycle in the islands of the Maldives meant that they frequently faced shortages of drinking water, and that the task to produce and supply clean drinking water for the people should be undertaken at huge costs.

The President also highlighted on the adverse affects of climate changes on the Maldives and her people. He said that the lives of the Maldivians were joined with the seas around the country, and that being a low-land nation surrounded by the massive Indian Ocean, problems such as seal-level rise should have especially serious repercussions for the country. The President then spoke on the deadly damage caused to the Maldives by the 2004 tsunami.

Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice is a non-governmental organization founded by Mary Robinson, former President of the Republic of Ireland, to protect the rights of poor and small countries of the world in relation to the issue of climate change.
