Government Accountability Committee decides against approving three ministers

The Government Accountability Committee has decided against the Parliament granting approval for Minister of Health Dr Ahmed Jamsheed, Minister of Housing Dr Mohamed Muiz, and Minister of Environment and Energy Dr Mariyam Shakeela.

The decision was made with the votes of four out of seven members present at the meeting.

The members who voted against the approval are Alhan Fahmy who recently left MDP and joined JP, MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) members Mohamed Nazim, Mohamed Rasheed and Mariya Ahmed Didi.

The members who voted in favour of the approval are PPM PG member Ilham Ahmed, JP PG member Ahmed Moosa and DRP PG member Ali Saleem.

The Committee also passed that Minister of Human Rights Fathimath Dhiyana should be granted approval.

Alhan Fahmy abstained when this vote was taken, resulting in a tie of 3-3. The decision was made by Chairperson Mohamed Mujtaz voting in favour of Dhiyana.

Committee members PPM PG member Abdul Raheem Abdullah, Vilifushi MP Riyaz Rasheed, and Medhu Henveiru MP Ali Azim were absent from the meeting.

The Government Accountability Committee has carried out the task of granting approval for ministers on two occasions this year, the second time being when changes were made to the government structure and Ministries of Human Rights and Environment were created.
