Meedhoo MP Siyam granted permission to form new political party

Elections Commission has granted permission to Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed and Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir to obtain the signatures of 3000 citizens, and do the necessary to create a new political party.

Siyam accepted the permission to create ‘Maldives Development Alliance’ (MDA) today at a ceremony held at Elections Commission this afternoon. The ceremony was attended by Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir and several individuals who had applied to join the party.

Siyam said at the ceremony that the purpose of creating a political party is to protect Islam and work towards the economic development of Maldives.

He stressed that the new party will uphold the rules to operate political parties, and ‘will not mock other parties’.

“We will not personally attack or mock political parties of other ideologies. Our sole purpose is to bring happiness and peace to the people,” he said.

Siyam assured that the new party will not engage in negative practices conducted by some parties in the name of democracy.

MP Amir said at the ceremony that efforts will be made to speed up completion of the regulation on political parties.

“Our party will do everything possible to revise the laws to strengthen the policies on political parties,” he said.

Vice President of Elections Commission Ahmed Fayaz expressed confidence that MDA would work towards the development of the country.
