Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has said that Leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom taking initiative to reform the party was a good omen, and that all politicians should follow suit and take initiative to reform the country.
Nasheed made the statement in a series of tweets sent out through his official Twitter account on Saturday.
Maumoon said last week that PPM, a party he founded, had lost all discipline, and announced that he has set off to reform the party – setting up an advisory committee to assist him in the effort.
Those in the advisory committee are; former Cabinet minister Aneesa Ahmed, former People’s Majlis Speaker Seena Ahmed Zahir, former Cabinet minister and lawmaker Hamdhoon Hameed, former Ministry of Gender coordinator Aminath Nadhira, former Cabinet minister Rashida Yoosuf, and State Minister for Ministry of Gender Athifa Shukoor.
Maumoon announced his reform agenda after conflicts between him and his half-brother, current Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom resulted in a divide within the party.
Nasheed, sentenced to 13 years in prison, is currently living in UK as a political refugee after he travelled to the country, gaining permission from Maldivian government for a back surgery.
