Employment Tribunal has ruled that Somerset Hotel Maldives was right in firing one of its guest relations officers for using foul language.
Somerset Hotel fired the employee fired the employee, saying that he had used foul language within the hearing of customers staying at the hotel.
The employee filed the case with Employment Tribunal saying that he had been fired without prior notice.
He asked that he be re-assigned to the post and given salary and allowances due from the day he was fired up until the day he is re-assigned the job.
Tribunal said that the individual was not terminated from his post unlawfully, but in accordance with Employment Act, Article 23.
Tribunal, however, ordered Somerset Hotel to pay the former employee MVR 16,000 as compensation, as the business had failed to follow procedure when terminating an employee.
The verdict was issued on Wednesday.
Somerset has been ordered to pay the money in bulk within 14 days.
