President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has established a Maldivian Embassy, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Germany.
The decision was made by the President on 22 June 2016.
The President’s Office said that the embassy was established in an effort to introduce the Maldives to world and gain the support and aid along with other projects for the development of the Maldives as part of the government’s foreign policy.
“The Embassy will work towards furthering ties between the two countries, and others in the region; to enhance the good will between its peoples and its governments, to promote Maldivian tourism in Germany and to strengthen existing bilateral relationships.” The President’s Office said.
There is no German embassy in the Maldives. But the German Ambassador to Sri Lanka is also accredited as a representative to the Maldives. And so the current German Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives is Dr. Jürgen Morhard.
Countries currently with Maldivian embassies and missions include China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, UAE, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, UK, Malaysia, Pakistan, Indian and Belgium. And non-resident ambassadors are assigned to the countries such as Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, South Korea and USA that does not have Maldivian diplomatic mission.
Maldivian emissaries are also assigned to the UN offices in New York, USA and Geneva, Switzerland.
