Committee holds first discussion on issuing a MoniCon order

The Committee formed by the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has met and discussed for the first time on issued a Monitor and Control (MoniCon) Order to put a tracking tag on a person.

The Committee consists of Home Minister Umar Naseer, Fisheries Minister, Dr. Mohamed Shainee and the Finance Minister, Abdulla Jihad.

In an interview with Sun Media today, Home Minister Umar Naseer said that a case of a person that needed to be tagged was presented at the first meeting of the Committee was held today. The Minister said that the Committee is in support to move forward with the tag.

Minister Umar said that the High Court is yet to make a decision on the MoniCon Orders requested by the Police against ten people.

It has been over a week since the Police requested the MoniCon Order. The Anti-Terrorism Law states that the High Court must make a decision on a MoniCon request within 24 hours.

Umar Naseer said that some people describes him as too strict issuing MoniCon orders on those that does not deserve it but it is not true and the orders are being issued against those that need to be tagged.

The Minister said that there are 200 of those people in the country and it needs to be done to stop the violence in the country.

Home Minister Umar Naseer said that there are challenges in executing the orders and was aware of those challenges when the work began.
