Maldivian government condemns mass shooting in Florida

Maldivian government has condemned the mass shooting that took place in a nightclub – Pulse - in Orlando, Florida on Saturday – the worst mass shooting in American history.

A tweet was sent out on the official Twitter account of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives in which Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon condemned the mass shooting on behalf of Maldivian government.

50 people were killed and 53 people injured in the shooting carried out by Omar Mateen, 29.

Marteen was killed by police officers in the ensuing shootout.

Marteen, of Afghan origin, was born and raised in America.

Marteen’s ex-wife Sitora Yusufiy made a public statement after the shooting, in which she said that Marteen had an ugly temper, was bipolar and mentally unstable.

She said that Marteen was religious, but that he had not been a radical.

The marriage was short-lived, lasting only four months after Yusufiy’s family got alerted that Marteen was physically abusive.

Terrorist organization – Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the extent of its involvement has not been verified yet.

Marteen was a security guard working for security company G4S, and had a license to carry firearms.

G4S reported to media that he was vetted twice, in 2007 and 2013, and had come up clean both times.

He had not been in the terror watch list either.
