Government not involved in Maldives investigation in any way: Singapore government

The government of Singapore has said that the Singapore government was not in any way involved in the appointment of retired Singapore High Court Judge G P Selvam as co-chair of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) in the Maldives.

Channel News Asia referred to the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and said that several retired Singapore judges were approached directly by the government of Maldives and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

According to an MFA spokesperson, it was Mr Selvam's personal decision to accept the appointment by the Government of Maldives.

The Singapore Judge was planned to travel to Maldives this Thursday, however he arrived last Saturday.

The CNI has now been reconstituted; it is made up of Ismail Shafeeu, Dr Ibrahim Yasir, Dr Ali Fawaz, former President Nasheed’s representative Gaha Saeed, and the retired Singapore Judge.

This change was initiated by the Commonwealth.

The CNI will recommence work on Thursday.
