It was Mr Selvam's decision to accept the appointment to CNI: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the Singapore government was not involved in the appointment of retired Singapore High Court Judge G P Selvam as co-chair of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) in the Maldives.

Responding to a question posed by a reporter before he departed to participate in the Rio+ summit, the President said that two Singapore Judges expressed interest to join the CNI, and Mr Selvam was recruited by the Commonwealth after considering their CVs.

It was Mr Selvam's personal decision to accept the appointment by the Government of Maldives.

The CNI is now made up of Ismail Shafeeu, Dr Ibrahim Yasir, Dr Ali Fawaz, former President Nasheed’s representative Gaha Saeed, and the retired Singapore Judge.

Mr Selvam has held the post of Singapore High Court Judge for ten years.
