Rio+ 20 summit would facilitate international aid for primary services: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the Rio+ 20 summit would facilitate international aid for electricity, water and sewerage services in islands.

Speaking to reporters at the official jetty before departing to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the summit on sustainable development, the President said that the potential challenges that may be faced in the developmental process of the country need to be researched and addressed today.

“Issues such as erosion, establishment of sewerage and water systems need to be addressed. Connecting islands by a transport system is also necessary for the development of Maldives,” the President said.

The President said that the government’s aim is to provide good standard water, sewerage and electricity services at low prices in the future, and the summit would be of assistance in this regard.

“We will find out the possibilities of obtaining international assistance for development challenges faced by small nations,” the President said.
