Muizzu: Government did not ask for MVR 33k per month in rent for Tata flats

Ministry of Housing, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Tuesday that the government never asked for MVR 33,000 per month in rent for flats built by Indian conglomerate – Tata.

Muizzu said that government asked that tenants complete paying MVR 2 million within five years, and that it did not necessitate tenants paying the government MVR 33,000 per month.

“Some will not be paying any money the first year. Government has no problem with that. They just need to complete paying the MVR 2 million within five years. That’s it,” said Muizzu.

Muizzu said that tenants had the opportunity to arrange payment to their convenience.

Some of the people who applied for the flats in Gaakoshi land were sent letters of ownership during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s presidency. They were instructed on how the rent payment should be made during Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s presidency – which consisted of MVR 9,725 per month in rent payment for three-bedroom flats.

Total payment was to be settled within 20 years.

However, a letter sent to the tenants by Ministry of Housing on April read that the MVR 2 million needed to be settled within five years. And that those who will be awarded ownership of the flats will be decided again based on those who had the ability to make the payment.

MVR 2 million within five months measures up to MVR 33,333.33 per month.
