An online petition has been started to be submitted at the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture to open a veterinarian clinic with special equipment and an animal shelter in the Maldives.
The petition was started two weeks ago on the popular American petition website, Change.org. So far, the petition has achieved 822 names out of it’s target 1000.
Fareena Aminath, who started the petition, said that the purpose of the petition is to open a veterinarian clinic and an animal shelter in the country. And she said that efforts were made in the past to no avail.
The petition says that as the animals in the country are losing their natural habited due to the development of the country’s infrastructure.
“Furthermore, there are many incidents of cruelty such as torture, killing and fatal injury due to being hit by vehicles.” The petition said.
While a large portion of the population has some type of pet, typically the breeds of birds and cats, there is no veterinarian service in the country when these animals get ill. And if for any reason, one cannot have the pet any longer, there is no animal shelter to take such animals in. Which in turn end up with a large number of domesticated animals on the streets.
