Member-countries of Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) have agreed to enforce restriction on skipjack tuna fishing in Indian Ocean.
The agreement was made during the IOTC annual conference held at Reunion Islands on Saturday.
The agreement, designed to promote sustainable fishing in Indian Ocean region was pushed by Maldives, Kenya and International Pole and Line Federation.
Marine Swordfish Council has also stressed the important of the agreement, so that fishing in the Indian Ocean region be made more sustainable.
The council noted Maldives’ initiative in pushing the agreement.
The decision of IOTC was welcomed by Maldivian Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee, on behalf of the Maldivian government.
