A’ Level Top Ten awarding ceremony has been scheduled for Sunday despite lawsuit pressed by former Addu High School student Mariyam Naufa who claimed she had been denied the top spot in A’ Level exams due to negligence on part of Ministry of Education, and asked the court for an order to stall the awarding ceremony until the issue was resolved.
Naufa requested that her GCE A’ Level exam paper in Islam – which she did in 2014 – be remarked after she got a “B” in the paper. She claims that negligence on part of Ministry of Education led to delay in her getting her result. And the ministry told her to participate in A’ Level exams in June, 2015.
Naufa re-sat for GCE A’ Level exam in Islam in June, 2015, as per instruction of Ministry of Education, and received an “A” in the subject.
She said that Education Ministry sent a letter to Addu High School, saying that results of all students who re-sat the Islam exam due to the issue with cashing would be included when selecting the Top Ten students in 2016.
The lawsuit says that Education Ministry has gone against their word and said that January, 2014 results would be considered for Top Ten instead of June, 2015 results, which would mean that Naufa would be awarded the 2nd spot instead of the top spot.
She asked that the decision be ruled void, and an order be issued to stall the awarding ceremony until she was awarded the top spot.
Students who achieve the top spot in A’ Level exams are awarded all-expense-paid scholarships in any country of their choice by the state.
