Van Oord completes its part in S. Feydhoo land reclamation project

Dutch company, Van Oord – which was one of the companies which built the famous Palm Islands in Dubai – has completed its part in the land reclamation project in S. Feydhoo.

Van Oord was contracted to reclaim 50 hectors of land, which they started on May 10.

The total cost of Feydhoo land reclamation project – which also includes building a 1,680-meter-long seawall around the reclaimed land – is MVR 168.8 million.

MVR 88.8 million was allocated in state budget for the project this year.

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu tweeted Thursday night that land reclamation in Feydhoo was complete – though he did not state when it was completed in his tweet.

Deputy Mayor of Addu City Council, Abdulla Thoyyib said that the Van Oord completed reclaiming land on Wednesday, and that the company had already packed up the equipment and machinery they used for the project.

He said that work on building the seawall had not started yet. And that land that was reclaimed was already eroding in some parts due to bad weather being experienced in the region at the moment.
