Chief Magistrate of the Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili Court, Ahmed Nihan has named eight witnesses to prove that he did not try to illegally arrest President Abdulla Yameen.
The State also presented a list of names as witnesses to prove Nihan’s guilt. Four of the names presented by Nihan are also on the list of witnesses by the prosecution. The State also presented some closed witnesses as well.
Ahmed Nihan is being charged with Terrorism, Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism, Misuse of Official Authority, Acting Against the Authorized Power and Forging an Official Document for the illegal attempt to arrest President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
List of names presented as defence witnesses:
• Police Staff Sargent Ali Ahmed
• Police Staff Sargent Siraj Abdul Gadir
• Police Staff Sargent Abdulla Maseeh
• Police Sargent Ali Waseem
• Mohamed Nisham, Malé City
• Chief Inspector of Police, Ahmed Muslim
• Chief Superintendent of Police, Hamdhoon Rasheed
• Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Saudi
Points the prosecution would be aiming to prove:
• Meeting former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhusin at 2:45 a.m. on the night of 7 June 2015 with a group of people.
• Former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhusin provided an email and a corresponding password inside the Maamigili Court.
• Accessing the email address and downloading a file titles “Maafushi Amuru” (Maafushi Order) and making amends to forge a court order.
• Attempted to arrest President Yameen after preparing the document.
The list of witnesses named by Nihan today is the same witnesses on the list provided by the former Prosecutor General, Muhuthaz Muhusin for his defence.
The next hearing, with the witness testimonies would be on 31 May at 1 p.m.
