Discrimination was involved in Hameed

Ismail Visham, the attorney of the former Head of Police Intelligence Department Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Hameed, has said that Hameed was arrested differently from normal Police practice when arresting people.

He made this statement at the hearing at court today, on the case filed to High Court requesting to cancel Criminal Court’s order to detain Hameed. He said that the Criminal Court order is unacceptable.

Visham noted that Police officers who had been charged with more serious crimes in the past, had not been detained.

He said that while Hameed was arrested under suspicion of hiding evidence and influencing witnesses, the Criminal Court order did not refer to this point. Rather, Criminal Court had stated public safety and security as reasons for Hameed’s detention.

Countering Hameed’s defence, Prosecutor of the Prosecutor General’s Office Hussain Nashid said that Police officers suspected of being involved in crimes had been arrested in the past as well, and that Hameed was detained based on a Judge’s reasoning, and not on any accusation made by the Police.

Today’s hearing was concluded by declaring that if no further issues arise, the verdict will be delivered during the next session.
