Captain was under the influence - no license

Maldives Police Service has said that the captain of the boat that collided with the railing of the Tsunami Monument Square was under the influence at the time of the incident and he does not have a captain’s license.

About 25 feet of the railing around the Tsunami Monument Square was damaged in the incident that took place this morning around 10:30 a.m.

Police brought the boat, Fresh-6, involved in the collision under their custody along with it’s captain following the incident.

Information Officer of the Police, Chief Station Inspector Ismail Ali told Sun Media tonight that the suspect in custody has a history of “similar incidents” and has been counseled before.

Chief Station Inspector Ismail Ali said that he was not arrested regarding the incident only but for his behavior as well.

The Police did not release any information on the boat captain under arrest.

Police Information Officer said that the captain was under the influence when he was taken into custody and his urine tested positive for drugs.

The Tsunami Monument was relocated to the former “Thinruh Park” was remodeled as the Tsunami Monument Square in a project of about a MVR 3 million. The new Tsunami Monument Square was opened on 13 March 2016 by the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
