Certificates have been awarded to the inmates that took part in the courses at Maafushi Prison organized by the Maldives Correctional Service.
Maldives Correctional Service said that the purpose of conducting such courses targeted at convicts is to make them acceptable individuals when they return to society after serving time.
Certificates were awarded to the inmates that took part in four different courses at the prison today. Ten inmates from the first batch of the tailor course level 1 conducted by the Institute for Correctional Studies received the certificate of completion while 12 inmates received the certificate from the second batch.
While three inmates completed the wood carving course conducted by the Academy for Training Research and the Institute for Correctional Studies, 66 inmates completed certificate level 1 of the Qirat (fluent recitation of the holy Quran) course conducted by the Institute for Holy Quran and Sunnah and 20 inmates completed the certificate level 2.
The certificate were awarded to the inmates by the Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Shihan and the Malaysian Commissioner General of Prisons, Zulkifli bin Omar along with the MP for the Kudahuvadhoo constituency Ahmed Amir and the MP for Dhidhdhoo constitutency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Malaysian Commissioner General of Prisons, Zulkifli bin Omar said that the convicts going to prison is a test for them.
"Allah left you. That's why Allah sent you to the prisons. You must be patient with the sentence you serve here. Actually it's a test from god. There are so many people doing wrong in the community. But they are not caught so they are not here. this is a turning point for you." Commissioner Zulkifli bin Omar said.
