Bank of Maldives (BML) has temporarily removed the phone credit recharging features from their ATMs, internet banking and mobile application.
The bank made the decision after the Home Minister, Umar Naseer ordered the telecommunication companies Dhiraagu and Ooredoo to reduce the daily recharge limit.
A statement issued by the bank today said that their service from their ATMs were not a service of recharging credit but the sale of recharge vouchers or phone cards similar to a direct sale from a telecommunication company.
BML said that they received a copy of the letter from the Home Minister to the telecommunication companies ordering to reduce the recharge limit due to the increase in the number of scams calling in the name of different promotions and asking for credit recharge codes.
The bank said that their immediate step to stop the scams is to discontinue the service.
While phone scams are being run in the name of different promotions, authorities have said that no government entity or private company would call asking for money from the public.
