German woman – Marion Arendt – has won civil lawsuit against Maldivian man who conned 26,220.54 Euros (MVR 455,720.98) out of her under the pretense that he would marry her.
Arendt sued Hassan Ali from Sanaamuguge in S. Hithadhoo for the 26,220.54 Euros (MVR 455,720.98) and the 190.15 Euros (MVR3,304) it took to transfer the money.
Hassan Ali, and the man the bank account the money was transferred to – Mohamed Sidhrath from G. Saadhuna Manzil – had said in court that the money was a gift from Arendt, and that they did not have to return it back to her.
Civil Court ruled that Hassan Ali and Sidhrath saying in court that the money was a gift was a confession that they had received the money. And that they had failed to prove why they did not have to return back the money to Arendt.
The court said that Arendt was not legally in any position that required her to take care of their expenses.
Court said that Hassan Ali and Sidhrath had not provided any evidence to prove that the money was a gift from Arendt.
While Arendt did not have to prove that the money was sent by her because Hassan Ali had promised to marry her, based on a verdict issued by High Court in a similar case.
Court ordered Hassan Ali and Sidhrath to pay back total 206,410.69 Euros (MVR 459,026.98) including money sent and transfer fees to Arendt within four months, starting from May 12, 2016.
Neither Hassan Ali, nor Sidhrath was present in court when the verdict was issued.
