New terminal project at INIA to begin in two weeks

Economic Minister, Mohamed Saeed has said that the project to build a new terminal at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport would begin in two weeks.

Speaking at a press conference by the Economic Council today, Minister Saeed said that while preparations are being made to build a new runway and apron at the airport, the work on the new terminal would begin in two weeks.

Minister Saeed said that land reclamation would begin at Hulhulé next month to increase the passenger capacity at INIA to seven million people.

“Terminal work and runway work would almost go together we are estimating.” Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said.

He said that through the major changes in the economy, all income to the country is connected the airport.

The USD 800 million project to develop INIA is contracted to China’s Beijin Urban Construction Group (BUCG).

A 3,400 meter long, 65 meter wide runway would be built along with the current runway as part of the project. The new runway can accommodate the biggest airplane currently in use, the A380 by Airbus. And the old runway would be turned into a taxi way.

The first phase of the INIA development project is set to be complete in 2018.
