Some islands in the Gaafu Dhaalu atoll have been hit by strong sea swells today.
Sources say that sea swells were experienced today in Thinadhoo and Gadhdhoo.
Talking to Sun Media, member of the Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo Island Council, Saud Ali said that the swells came inland from the South and West side of the island today.
He said that the water came in through the drainage at the island’s coastal protection. The drainage was built to redirect water in the island back to the ocean in case of floods.
Councilor Saud said that while the water has reached the major roads on the west side of the island from the drainage, they are working to find a temporary solution.
And as a temporary solution, Councilman Saud said that MTCC is placing large cut stone as to prevent more swells flooding the island and is still ongoing.
While strong sea swells hit Malé City on Thursday, Maldives Meteorological Center has said that swells are expected to hit the islands across the country in the next few days.
