The year’s Martyr’s Day festivities have begun as scheduled in Addu City.
Every year, 1 Shaban on the Islamic Calendar is celebrated as Martyr’s Day in the Maldives. This year’s 1 Shaban falls on Sunday, 8 May.
Martyr’s Day is celebrated in the Maldives in the honor of Sultan Ali VI, famously known as Ali Rasgefaanu, who died in battle with the Portuguese.
As the Home Ministry made the decision to hold the celebration of the day in Addu City this year, the festivities have started today.
Speaking on behalf of the Home Ministry, Mohamed Abdul Samad told Sun Media that a Children’s Evening was held at Hulhudhoo-Meedhoo, Addu City, today, in which the Deputy Minister of the Home Ministry, Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem) took part along with a number of people from the island.
He said that information about the historic heroes who died in battle was shared with the children visiting through numerous stalls.
And a motorcycle ride is set to take place tomorrow at the same time in all the wards across Addu City.
The official Martyr’s Day function is set for Sunday night at Addu City. Defence Minister, Adam Shareef Umar and the Home Minister, Umar Naseer is set to take part in the function.
