Maldives, Malaysia make pact to share intel on terrorism

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak have agreed to share intelligence reports the two countries regarding terror threats as well as religious extremists.

Speaking during a joint press conference by PM Razak and President Yameen during Yameen’s official visit to Malaysia, the Maldivian president said that they were considering signing a treaty to stop double taxation in order to strengthen ties and improve business and economic transactions between the two countries.

Malaysian Newspaper – The Star News – reported that the two countries had agreed to share intelligence on religious extremists, and to work closely on criminal and terrorism related activities.

According to Star News, the two leaders had also discussed to strengthen investment ties – especially in tourism and construction.

PM Razak had talked about the discussion between the two countries to extend on arrival visa for Maldivians visiting Malaysia to 90 days.

“Extending visa will be convenient for parents of Maldivian students studying in Malaysian institutions. I also believe it will increase number of Maldivians visiting Malaysia,” said Razak.

Yameen described Malaysia as a regional leader in economic development, and said that he took example from Malaysian economic policies.

President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim also met with Maldivians staying in Malaysia during their visit.
