Criminal Court has sentenced the owner of Maleesha Haj and Umra Service – Ismail Abdul Latheef – to 6 months in prison after he was found guilty of issuing cheques with full knowledge the bank account did not have sufficient balance, and of failure to pay up the money for the cheques.
Ismail Abdul Latheef was issued the sentence on March 16, after two cheques issued to a company back in 2012 bounced.
The two cheques that bounced were supposed to be the remainder of the payment to Link Service for a loan taken from them.
Ismail Abdul Latheef had issued two USD 10,000 cheques from an account in his name at Mauritius Commercial Bank in payment of a MVR 300,000 loan taken from Link Serve.
Ismail Abdul Latheef has also been charged with a scam he ran in which he took money from a large number of people under the pretense that he would arrange haj pilgrimage for them. No verdict has been issued in that case yet.
