Police have started using ankle monitors against six gang members High Court authorized Monitor and Control order against.
Home Minister Umar Naseer requested MoniCon orders against 11 people.
High Court has now authorized MoniCon orders against all 11 people, and the law is now being enforced on the first six people it was authorized upon.
Police information officer spoke to “Sun” on Friday and said that they had started using ankle monitors to enforce the MoniCon orders issued by High Court against six people on Thursday.
The six people who have been tagged with ankle monitors are:
• Fazeel Hameed, 25, M. Lily Park.
• Mohamed Shabil Ismail, 23, G. Kerafaage.
• Midhuhath Aboobakr, 20, Dhafthar RS. 9634.
• Fassaan Waleedh, 20, Fahudha Vaadhee, G. A. Dhaandhoo.
• Athif Abdul Haleem, 24, M. Hissaa.
• Ahmed Rizam, 26, Dhafthar Number DHR 1475.
Police have said that all 11 people against whom the MoniCon order has been issued were repeat offenders operating in gangs and engaging in activities harmful to society.
Restrictions placed on the six people are:
• Being restricted from leaving their house from 10 pm to 6 am.
• Being restricted from leaving Male’ without permission from Home Ministry.
• Being restricted from being in certain areas stated in order issued against them.
• Placing restrictions on their finance and wealth.
• Restrictions on communication.
• Requiring them to sign in with police.
• Installing electronic monitoring devices on their person and their place of residence, and to have police keep take their pictures, pictures of their place of residence, as well as their fingerprints and other samples to monitor and control their movements.
Maldives Police Service has insisted that enforcing such measures against repeat offenders – especially those who gather in gangs in certain areas and harass residents of that area and commit crimes was important for the safety and protection of the society.
Police have also warned that legal measures would be taken against those who violate the MoniCon order, and said that MPS had established an efficient system to monitor and control such individuals.
