7th February was long overdue: Dr. Jameel

The resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed on the 7th of February 2012 was an event “long overdue”, said Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, the Minister of Home Affairs, and Deputy President of the Qaumee Party.

Speaking at a gathering of the Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) on the night of last Thursday, Dr. Jameel said that the nation deserved to see what happened on the 7th of February much earlier.

Dr. Jameel said that the people saw 7th of February with joy and happiness. He also said that the day was a necessary result that came when former President Nasheed’s policies and those of his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) utterly failed. Dr. Jameel also said that the people were waiting for Nasheed’s regime to come to an end.

“7th of February had to be realized, after the policies of President Nasheed and his party failed, causing the people to pray and demand for their government to dissolve. The people believe that the day was long overdue. That day had to come earlier”, said Dr. Jameel.

Dr. Jameel also said that those who worked for 7th February were proud victors of this nation, and that they were not rebels as wrongfully accused by Nasheed and his party.

Criticizing former President Nasheed harshly, Dr. Jameel said that Nasheed undermined the Constitution, broke the laws, hijacked people, caused enforced disappearances, sieged the Peoples’s Majlis and caused the people to lose it all.

“What Nasheed and his party did on the 8th of February, after their rule came to an end, was a horrible atrocity”, said Dr. Jameel. He added that Nasheed and his party caused this country financial losses amounting to 183 million Rufiyaa, on 8th February.
