Two of the most prominent leaders of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have published a report, which claims that Nasheed’s government was ousted in a coup d’état on the 7th of February this year.
The report published today was written by Amin Faisal and Mohamed Aslam. Amin was first the Minister of Defence and later the National Security Advisor for Nasheed during his presidency, while Aslam was the Minister of Housing at Nasheed’s cabinet.
The 99-page report was introduced today by Nasheed.
“The Rebellion by Police and Armed Forces” is the title of the report, and it was published in a special ceremony held at the Malé Council Hall. Speaking to journalists during the ceremony, Aslam said that the report would include information on how the rebellion was planned and carried out, and how the police and armed forces participated in it.
Aslam said that there were some “individuals who opposed MDP line of thought, and that they joined hands with opposition politicians to plan the coup. He said that intelligence about the planned coup was confirmed by commanders of the security forces some time during the 6th of February. Why they did not take any action to stop it would be clearly stated in the report, according to Aslam.
Amin Faisal said that “information provided for the report were given by leaders and officers of police and armed forces”.
“Not all members of the police and armed forces supported or participated in the rebellion. Those who did not participate came out with courage to share the information with us”, said Amin.
The Report does not include any comment or word from former President Mohamed Nasheed. Aslam said that “it is not proper for President Nasheed to talk about it to private individuals, as he has not yet spoken about it to the Inquiry Commission”.
Aslam and Amin stated that another report, an official one by MDP, would soon be published. They said that the upcoming report would be written by MDP Parliamentarian Ali Waheed.
