Committee on Financial Matters of the People’s Majlis has decided today that each Member of Parliament would be entitle to an MRF 20,000 allowance for committee work as passed by the Majlis before. Upon making the decision, the Committee also asked Speaker of the Majlis to give MPs their outstanding allowances from January to July this year. Each MP is entitled, hence, to a lump sum of MRF 140,000 as committee allowance.
Speaking to the press, an official from the People’s Majlis said today that the decision of the Committee on Financial Matters was made yesterday on the basis of the Majlis decision made last December.
The official also said that members whose attendance to committees was below 50% were not entitled to any allowances. Members who maintained an attendance record of 50%-75% would get MRF 10,000, while those whose attendance record is higher than 75% would get the full amount.
An MP in the Maldives gets a monthly salary of MRF 62,500, and all the other allowances are in addition to the salary.
