A delegation from European Parliament arrived in Maldives on Sunday morning upon invitation of Maldivian government.
According to Maldivian Foreign Ministry, the delegation will be assessing the current situation in Maldives and meeting with high-ranking government officials including People’s Majlis Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon said on a recent press conference that she believed European Parliament, along with other international institutions did not have an accurate picture of what was actually happening in the country.
“You must have heard about the big resolution. The resolution was not necessary for Maldives,” said Dhunya during the press conference, in reference to the resolution passed by European Parliament calling out for release of former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed and other political prisoners.
Dhunya said that the Maldivian government was being accused of gross human rights violations, and that the government had never, and would never violate any human right.
A delegation from Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) also arrived in Maldives on Sunday morning.
They have already met with Dhunya and Foreign Ministry officials, and are set to meet other government officials.
