President: Will get back State money stolen through corruption

President Abdulla Yameen has said that Attorney General Mohamed Anil would start work this year on getting the money owed to State by corrupt individuals.

Speaking during presidential address to parliament Thursday morning, President Yameen said that Attorney General’s Office and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) reports would be reviewed, and guilty individuals penalized.

“Based on reports over the past years by Anti-Corruption Commission and Attorney General’s Office regarding corruption involving State property and money, Attorney General will start work this year to get back money owed to State by such individuals,” he said.

President Yameen said the government needed to start special efforts to get compensation for the loss to State due to corruption.

Meanwhile, authorities have started a probe into transactions by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), with a special audit underway of transactions from November 17, 2013.

ACC has said that corrupt activities within MMPRC, once fully uncovered, is expected to be the biggest act of corruption in Maldivian history.
