Special police team in Thinadhoo to investigate powerhouse fire

A special police investigative team has arrived in G. Dh. Thinadhoo to investigate the fire which burned the island’s powerhouse to the ground late Monday night – plunging the whole island into darkness.

Police media official said that the team that arrived in Thinadhoo on Tuesday consisted of an investigative team from Serious and Organized Crime Department and a team of forensic specialists.

The team is collecting information needed for the investigation in collaboration with police stationed at Thinadhoo.

Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation, Mohamed Nimal said that the fire is believed to have originated from a storeroom next to the engine room. But that the storeroom did not contain any flammable material.

Nimal said that it would take two months to fully restore uninterrupted electricity to the island.

Private citizens and major companies have been rushing to help the people of Thinadhoo – including Dhiraagu, Ooredoo, Maldivian and MIFCO.
