Nasheed leaves for UK after stop in Colombo

Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed – who is serving a 13-year prison sentence – left for UK on Wednesday night after making a two-day stop in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Nasheed met with his supporters and family members living in Sri Lanka during the two days he stayed there.

Nasheed was given permission by Maldivian government to travel to UK for a spinal surgery after his brother, Dr. Ibrahim Nashid signed documents on behalf of his family to act as the guarantor that Nasheed will return back to the country and hand himself over to Correctional Service officials.

Once after being allowed out of prison, Nasheed was visited by and called by various top officials from foreign governments.

Maldivian government’s decision to honor his request to be given permission to travel to UK for his surgery has been met with approval by international community.

He has been allowed 30 days for his medical treatment.
