Tourism Ministry joins “Sailing Around Maldives”

Maldivian Tourism Ministry has signed a MoU to participate in the Atoll Sailor event - “Sailing Around Maldives”.

The MoU was signed Thursday morning of behalf of Tourism Ministry by Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer.

Speaking to press after signing the MoU, Zameer said that the main purpose of Tourism Ministry joining in on the event was to make Maldivian youth aware of the opportunities they have within tourism industry and raise general awareness regarding tourism industry among youth.

“As you know, President Yameen has kick-started a program to develop and expand the tourism industry in a big way. In light of that, tourism industry has been specifically targeted as a way of improving the economy by developing the airport and increasing number of passengers coming to Maldives,” he said.

Alia Investments Private Limited signed the MoU to become the event’s main sponsor last Tuesday.

“Sailing Around Maldives” is an event that has caught the imagination of many. It is an event in which Abdul Gafoor Ali (Gabbe) will attempt to relive the way of Maldivian forefathers and sail around the archipelago in a sail boat.

He estimates that it would take him about 20 to 25 days to complete the feat. But pointed out that it was just an estimate, and that the whole attempt depended on the wind.

He will start the journey from Jetty Number 1 in Male’, go south and make his way around Addu City and then north, towards Ha. Thuraakunu. He will make his journey back to Male’ once near Thuraakunu.
