2 Cabinet ministers questioned over MMPRC case

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has questioned Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee and Attorney General and Acting Gender and Law Minister Mohamed Anil over Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

“Sun” has been informed that the two high-ranking government officials were questioned about a week back.

It is Agriculture Ministry that manages uninhabited islands in Maldives, and Shainee was questioned to find out whether any corruption took place in handing over the islands to MMPRC to develop as resorts. And to find out if the many islands that are handed over to MMPRC each week were handed out after discussion between the two institutions.

Unlike Shainee, who was made to give a statement, Anil was asked just one question.

Shainee spoke to “Sun” on Wednesday and said that he had only been questioned to verify the procedure involved in handing over uninhabited islands for development as resorts as it fell under his jurisdiction.

He also complained that some media organizations were inaccurate in reporting what took place.

Anil has been unavailable for comment on the matter.

Former Vice President and Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor and former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath were also questioned regarding the case.
