State Trading Organization (STO) has been tasked with taking down the cafes in Male West Harbor area – locally known as “kada” – and building modern food courts there.
The agreement of the project – which includes food courts, parking zones and public toilets – in a ceremony held at Housing Ministry on Wednesday.
The agreement was signed on behalf of government by Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and on behalf of STO by their Managing Director Ahmed Shaheer.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Muizzu said that the area will become very scenic once the project is complete.
“…The area will be, god willing, transformed into a very scenic, modern area. It will complement the park built in front of the area and will be developed in tune with the ambiance of the area,” said Muizzu.
Housing Ministry said that the food courts built there would have a kitchen, would be accessible from both sides and would have a huge area for people to sit and enjoy a drink or some food.
And that the area would have two parking lots that would be run on rotary basis.
The area will have around 25 -27 food courts once it is complete.
STO MD Shaheer said that the project would be complete within 6 months and that the company would announce guidelines through which to run the food courts on a later date.
“…God willing, we will develop and complete the area within 6 months. While developing the food courts, we will mainly focus on carrying out work in such a way that it does not inconvenience people using the food courts already there,” he said.
