Work has begun on constructing a courtroom in Dhoonidhoo so Criminal Court judges can go there and hold trials.
Police information officer Ismail Ali informed “Sun” that work began on constructing a courtroom in a police property Wednesday morning.
He said that the courtroom was being built to the specifications of Criminal Court.
He said that once the courtroom is built, prisoners no longer need to be transported to Male’ for trial and that the trial would instead be held in Dhoonidhoo.
Police said building a courtroom in Dhoonidhoo would been a reduction in transportation cost and a reduction in security threat.
The government originally planned on building a courtroom in Dhoonidhoo so trial can be held through video conference, with judges in Male’ and the suspect in Dhoonidhoo.
First hearing in case of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor and former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath was held that way; but the Prosecutor General’s Office refused to hold trial that way.
