Academic year begins with over 75,000 students

New academic year began on Wednesday with over 75,000 students in schools in Maldives.

Education Ministry said that there are a total of 75,755 students studying in schools in Maldives from Lower Kindergarten to grade 12 as the new academic year begins; 28,533 students studying in schools in Male’ and 47,222 students studying in schools in the atolls.

Speaking to press on Tuesday, Education Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham said that the number of expatriate teachers brought to the country by half. The number of expatriate teachers brought to Maldives in 2015 was 200, while the number of expatriate teachers brought to Maldives this year is 100.

There are 6,400 teachers working in 223 schools in Maldives, 4,200 of whom are Maldivian and 2,200 of whom are expatriates.

Dr. Aishath Shiham has said that student books have been provided to all Maldivian schools and that teachers have been arranged for all the schools as well.

Major changes have been brought to student textbooks with the new curriculum.

Dr. Aishath Shiham said it cost the government MVR 40 million for the textbooks.
