41 businesses with expat cashiers fined

Department of Immigration and Emigration has conducted a special operation today inspecting 88 businesses and fining 41 businesses that had expatriates working as cashiers.

A total of 88 businesses were inspected in the operation conducted by Immigration today in Malé City, H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City.

While 41 businesses were fined in the operation today, 24 of them were shops while 16 were cafés and restaurants.

In the operation today, Immigration found 17 expatriates working as cashiers today. While 12 were found in Malé City, three were found in Addu City and two in Kulhudhuffushi.

Immigration said that they also found two shops and a café that did not have their GST Registration and General Trade Permit openly displayed.

Businesses can be fined between MVR 10,000 - 50,000 for having expatriates as cashiers. The law came into effect banning expatriate cashiers on 1 April 2015.

Along with the restaurants fined today, the number of businesses fined in the operation by Immigration since 30 December has risen to 103.
