Umar: President Nasheed

Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that the fingerprint of the former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence after being convicted of terrorism, can be acquired through his lawyers.

The Home Minister tweeted that MDP has been asked to do it through the former President’s lawyers. He said that the lawyers meet with President Nasheed every day and the former President signs and fingerprints multiple documents.

The duration given by the Elections Commission to put fingerprints on the political party membership forms before the Law of Political Parties came into effect has now been expired.

While the Home Minister has clarified how MDP can acquire the former President’s fingerprint, MDP said that the Correctional Service refused their request to meet with the former President to acquire his fingerprint.

The former Chairperson of MDP, Reeko Moosa Manik has criticized MDP for trying get President Mohamed Nasheed’s fingerprint only a few days before the expiration of the six-month period given by the Elections Commission.
