Crimes decrease by 12 percent

Police have announced that compared to 2014, crimes went down by 12 percent in 2015 in the Maldives.

Police records show that the number of crimes reported went down from 15,725 in 2014 to 13,707 in 2015.

Categories which saw reductions include theft, mugging, and drugs.

Drug crimes went down from 3,138 in 2014 to 2,074 in 2015.

Cases of domestic violence however saw an increase, from 186 in 2014 to 338 in 2015.

Sexual offences also increased, from 476 in 2014 to 531 in 2015.

Murders also saw an increase. Nine people were murdered in 2015, namely Mohamed Ibthihaal, Jailam Ahmed Shakir, Ali Ziyadam, Shaheen Mia, Noor Adam Hassan Fulhu, Shaheen Mia, Hussain Shiar, Ahmed Zameen, and Ziyada Naeem.
