President inaugurates the bridge project

The agreement for the construction of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge to be built between Malé and Hulhulé has been signed and the project has been inaugurated.

At the special function held at Dhraubaaruge tonight, Housing Minster Dr. Mohamed Muizzu signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian Government. And the contractor Chine Communication and Construction Company (CCCC) was represented by the President of the company, Chen Gong.

The construction of the project was inaugurated by the President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom and the Deputy Minister of Commerce of China, Gao Yan.

The government has said that the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge would be 1.39 kilometers long and 20 meters wide with two lanes for four-wheel vehicles and two lanes for motorcycles along with a separate lane for bicycles and one for pedestrians on foot.

CCCC said that the bridge connecting the two islands across the sea would have a life span of 100 years. The company said that the bridge would resolve the traffic problem in Malé City and develop the country’s economy.

The contracting company also said the construction of the bridge would proceed within the first class highway standards.

Before the agreement to begin the bridge project, both countries have made an implementation agreement.

The purpose of an implementation agreement is to guide the actions of the two countries during the course of the project.
