Immigration out to check businesses for expat cashiers

Department of Immigration and Emigration has started a special operation to check if expatriate cashiers are at any stores, cafés or restaurants.

Information Officer of Immigration, Hassan Haleem told Sun Media today that they found five shops with expat cashiers today within the span of one hour.

Haleem said that the five shops have now been fined with MVR 10,000. He said that no steps were taken against the expat cashiers but if it persists, they would be deported.

Businesses can be fined between MVR 10,000 - 50,000 for having expatriates as cashiers.

The law came into effect banning expatriate cashiers on 1 April 2015.

Immigration says that so far they have deported 57 expatriates who were working as cashiers.
