Maldives Correctional Service has denied the rumors that the former President Mohamed Nasheed who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence would not be sent abroad for his surgery.
Information Officer of the Correctional Service, Moosa Rameez told Sun Media today that the rumors are definitely false and no such decision has been made so far.
He said that President Nasheed is now being treated from the two largest hospitals in the country and the doctors who were consulted with from both hospitals did not advise to go abroad for surgery.
“We have not made any such decision regarding President Nasheed. To send or to not send. According to our law, sending someone abroad can be discussed from the point when a doctor says that it is not a treatment that can be done here.” Moosa Rameez said.
Rameez said that if the doctors say it is not an operation that can be done from here, then a decision would be made from the medical board of MCA and President Nasheed’s case has not been presented to the board.
“Without the case going to the board we cannot decide to send or to not send.” Rameez said.
Regarding the former President’s illness, his lawyers said that the doctors have advised President Nasheed to do an L4-5 Micro Discectomy operation and it cannot be done in the Maldives. But Umar has said that a second opinion would be sought.
President Nasheed’s lawyers have said that publicizing the former President’s illness by the government is very irresponsible.
While President Nasheed was brought to ADK Hospital yesterday as well to consult a neurologist, he was also treated at the same hospital two weeks ago.
