Police work on eliminating internal corruption

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef has said that efforts have been launched to identify possible opportunities for corruption within the police force, and solve them.

Speaking during meeting held to provide information to police management board regarding national integrity plan by Anti-Corruption Commission for 2015-2019, CP Areef said that they had already begun to increase police integrity.

He said that he wished to comply with ACC’s national integrity plan, and briefed ACC regarding efforts being carried out by police to increase efficiency in procurement, recruitment and other such areas.

He said that a board was established in November 16 to evaluate and bring changes – if need be – to rules and regulations of the institution.

CP Areef also said that efforts were being made to strengthen integrity, raise awareness, increase speed and efficiency of investigation into cases reported and increase efficiency of services provided to the people.

These statements by the new CP comes after President Abdulla Yameen hinted that the police force was corrupt in his speech to public after the explosion onboard presidential speedboat – “Finifenma”.

He said that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor – who is now in prison – had influence over the entire police force, and that Adeeb had bribed police officers.

Adeeb, who had once been President Yameen's right hand-man, has been accused of trying to assassinate the president.
