Police statistics show an increase in number of cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse reported to police this year, when compared to such cases reported last year.
Police statistics show that there had been 171 cases of domestic violence and 439 cases of sexual abuse reported to police from November, 2013 to November, 2014. The numbers have risen to 313 cases of domestic violence and 484 cases of sexual abuse this year.
The increase in number of reported cases of domestic violence is significant – amounting to 83 percent. Reported cases of sexual abuse has also seen an increase of 12.5 percent.
The case of domestic violence and sexual abuse that grabbed the most attention this year is the case of the woman from Gdh. Thinadhoo who was abused by her husband. The abuse was so severe that it landed her in ICU where she is still fighting for her life hooked up to a ventilator.
Her husband is in police custody.
On the other hand, reported cases of scams, counterfeit, forgery, mugging and robbery has dropped.
Muggings have dropped by 18 percent, with 586 cases in 2014 and 484 cases in 2015.
4,758 cases of robbery were reported to police in 2014 and 3,728 cases in 2015 – a decrease of 22 percent.
Drug related cases reported to police have also dropped by 36 percent; with 2,986 cases reported in 2014 and 1,885 cases reported in 2015.
Overall cases reported to police this year have dropped by 14 percent when compared to 2014.
14,717 cases were reported in 2014, while 12,651 cases were reported in 2015.
