A protest march has been held in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo to calling to end abuse against women.
About 350 people - including men - participated in the even, led by a group of women.
Organisers said that the purpose of the protest, themed “Wake Up, Women”, was to raise awareness especially among women, regarding abuse against women.
The event comes after the arrest of a man whose wife, from Thinadhoo, ended up in the ICU in the hospital following sexual abuse.
Protesters observed a moment of silence and prayed for the woman’s speedy recovery.
She has been admitted in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for over a week, and the hospital said that although she showed signs of slow recovery last week, her condition took a turn for the worse on Monday.
Criminal Court extended remand by seven days for the accused, Ibrahim Shah, 40, on Monday.
